The PSTN switch-off: what it means for your business phone lines
Analogue phone lines are being retired. Here’s what changes, which devices are affected and how to prepare before the deadline.

The UK’s analogue telephone network — the PSTN — and ISDN are being retired. Calls are moving to digital, internet-based services. Openreach’s target is to complete the move by 31 January 2027.
What changes
Instead of a traditional copper phone line, voice calls run over a broadband connection — either through a digital line from your provider or a VoIP phone system.
Devices that need checking
- card payment terminals that dial out;
- intruder and fire alarms with a phone connection;
- lift emergency phones;
- door entry systems;
- fax and franking machines;
- telecare and pendant alarms.
A simple checklist
- List every line at each site and what it’s used for.
- Ask the suppliers of alarms, lifts and payment terminals whether their equipment works on a digital line.
- Plan for power cuts — digital lines need power at your premises.
- Book installs early; engineer slots get busy near deadlines.
