MPAN and MPRN explained: how to find your business supply numbers

Your MPAN identifies your electricity supply and your MPRN your gas supply. Here’s where to find them and why suppliers need them for an accurate quote.

When you ask for a business energy quote, the first thing a supplier needs is your supply number. Electricity and gas each have their own.

MPAN — electricity

The Meter Point Administration Number is shown on your electricity bill, often in a box with a large “S” on the left. It has two lines:

  • Top line — the profile class, meter time-switch code and line loss factor. Together they describe how your meter records usage and how network charges apply.
  • Bottom line — the 13-digit core, which identifies your supply point and network area.

The profile class is a useful clue: 03 and 04 are typical small business meters, 05–08 are maximum-demand meters, and 00 indicates a half-hourly meter.

MPRN — gas

The Meter Point Reference Number is shown on your gas bill and is usually between 6 and 10 digits. It identifies your gas supply point.

Why accurate numbers matter

Suppliers use these numbers to look up your meter details and usage history. A wrong digit can lead to a quote for the wrong meter type, delays or a rejected application.
