What sets your price

Most of your bill isn’t the energy itself.

Wholesale cost is one slice. Network charges, government levies and the supplier’s costs sit on top — we explain each one on your quote.

ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY — PROPORTIONS VARY BY SITE, METER AND CONTRACT.

Wholesale energy

What the supplier pays for your power or gas. It moves daily, which is why quotes are only valid for a short time.

Network charges

The cost of moving energy through the grid to your premises. Varies by region and meter type.

Policy costs & levies

Government schemes and the Climate Change Levy, set nationally and updated each April.

Supplier costs

Operating costs and margin. The part that really varies between quotes — which is why comparing matters.

Business energy contract types

Fixed, flexible or green — and the one to avoid.

ContractHow the price worksSuitsWatch for
FixedUnit rate and standing charge locked for the term, typically 1–5 years. Most small and medium businesses that want a predictable bill.Exit fees if you leave early; renewal notice windows.
FlexibleEnergy bought in blocks over time, tracking the wholesale market.Larger and multi-site users comfortable with some risk.Budget uncertainty; needs active management.
Green / renewableFixed or flexible, with electricity matched to certified renewable generation.Businesses reporting on carbon or bidding for contracts with ESG criteria.Check what’s actually backed — not every “green” tariff is equal.
Out-of-contract / deemedDefault prices applied when a contract ends or you move in without one.Nobody, for long.Usually higher than a negotiated rate.

Meter types

Your meter changes the quote. Here’s how.

NHH

Non-half-hourly

The standard business meter. Priced on annual usage with a single or day/night rate.

HH

Half-hourly

Records use every 30 minutes. Pricing reflects when you use power, not just how much.

E7

Economy 7

Cheaper night units. Worth it only if a big share of your use is genuinely overnight.

SMART

Smart meters

Automatic readings, no estimated bills, and better data to price your contract on.

Business energy FAQs

What people ask before they switch.

How long does it take to switch business energy supplier?

Once a supplier accepts your contract, the switch is handled between suppliers. Most new contracts are agreed in advance to start the day your current one ends, so there’s no gap in supply.

Will my supply be interrupted when I switch?

No. The same cables and pipes deliver your energy. Only the company that bills you changes.

What is a deemed or out-of-contract rate?

It’s the default price a supplier charges when there’s no agreed contract — for example when your fixed term ends, or you move into premises without one. It’s usually higher than a negotiated rate.

Can I get a business energy quote without a bill?

Yes. Your postcode, meter serial or supply number and a rough monthly spend are enough to start. A bill makes the quote more accurate.

Is there a cooling-off period for business energy contracts?

Not necessarily. Business energy contracts don’t carry a general cooling-off period. Once a supplier accepts your contract it may be binding, so check the terms — we’ll walk you through them before you agree.
